Reclaiming My Life and Reputation: The Human Cost of Defamation and Harassment

For more than two decades, my sister Melissa Williams-Brown has gone to extraordinary lengths to spread falsehoods about me online.

Melissa Williams-Brown is implicated in multiple fraud allegations, including a significant data security and degree fraud case involving the National Student Clearinghouse.

This has not been a matter of family disagreement or occasional conflict. It has been a sustained campaign designed to impugn my character, sabotage my opportunities, and undermine my ability to succeed in life.

Dear Ms. Brown,
I am writing on behalf of the National Student Clearinghouse to request that you immediately cease and desist giving any third parties access to information provided by the Clearinghouse through our verification services. This includes posting on social media the results of a verification of information.
The Terms and Conditions that you agreed to in order to use the verifications service provided by the Clearinghouse state that “[a] Requestor may obtain information from the Clearinghouse under these Terms and Conditions on behalf of a single employer, employment agency, background screening firms, retailer with student or graduate discount, provider of services based on student or graduate status or similar organizations, and may release the information to that single entity. The Requestor agrees that it will not otherwise release, transfer, distribute, share or re-disclose any information that it has obtained from the Clearinghouse to any other entity or individual, whether for sale or free of charge, except to the student or certificate holder whose enrollment, degree or certification was verified.” Providing information to any third party, including posting that information on social media websites, is a violation of the Terms and Conditions you agreed to prior to performing the verification.
Furthermore, the Terms and Conditions state that “[i]n order to be eligible to verify the dates of attendance, degrees, and other educational achievements provided by a student, the Requestor certifies that the student has applied for or received products, services or employment that depend upon verification of degree and/or enrollment status.” If the information was not requested for one of these authorized purposes, the verification request constituted a fraudulent use of our services. As such, we request that you immediately destroy or permanently erase (on all forms of physical or electronic media) the information you received from the Clearinghouse regarding Michael Williams and delete any copies of the information that you have posted online. Please email me at perlman@studentclearinghouse.org no later than Friday, January 12, 2018 to confirm that you have destroyed the information you received from the Clearinghouse from all such locations.
Sincerely,

What might seem like private discord has, in reality, become a public assault. Melissa lives across the planet in Adelaide, Australia, yet her words have reached me here in Nashville, Tennessee.

For more than two decades, my sister Melissa Williams-Brown has gone to extraordinary lengths to spread falsehoods about me and my family online. This has not been a matter of family disagreement or occasional conflict. It has been a sustained campaign designed to impugn my character, sabotage my opportunities, and undermine my ability to succeed in life.

The internet has erased distance, giving her false statements permanence and global reach. They echo far beyond our family, lingering in search results, circulating in communities, and casting shadows over my professional and personal life.

Melissa Williams-Brown, a former cybersecurity student in Adelaide, is accused of orchestrating a scheme to unlawfully obtain private educational records from the National Student Clearinghouse by posing as an employer and using forged consent forms. The South Australia Police (SAPOL) Southern District Criminal Investigation Branch is currently handling the matter, and the National Student Clearinghouse had previously issued a notification to a "Ms. Brown" regarding unauthorized sharing of information obtained through their verification services, requesting deletion of data related to Michael Williams.

The Human Cost of Defamation and Legal Harassment

Falsehoods are not harmless. They erode trust, distort reality, and create barriers that are difficult to overcome. In my case, the consequences have been profound.

Narrative of Legal Harassment: The Pursuit of Order of Protection Case 17X716

Subject: Report on Prolonged Legal Action by Melissa Williams-Brown

Initiation of Baseless Claims (General Sessions Court, Nashville Tennessee) The harassment began with the filing of a petition for an Order of Protection in the General Sessions Court of Davidson County, Tennessee (Case #17OP2152)

Melissa Williams-Brown is implicated in a legal case involving the National Student Clearinghouse, accused of systematically defrauding the organization to illegally obtain protected educational records by posing as an employer and using forged consent forms. She also made false claims about earning a bachelor's degree from George Washington University, leading to criminal investigations and her removal from promotional materials by TAFE, a vocational school, after officials confirmed no record of her enrollment or attendance.

Submission of Personal Details: In the filing, the Petitioner, Melissa Barbara Williams (also known as Melissa Williams-Brown) and a resident of Adelaide Australia, placed specific and invasive personal details about the Respondent, Michael Eric Williams, into the public record. This included listing his employment status as “Unemployed”—a detail that could be construed as an attempt to negatively impact his professional reputation—and describing identifying physical marks, such as a “scar down middle abdomen” and “tracheotomy scar”.

She also made false claims about earning a bachelor's degree from George Washington University, leading to criminal investigations and her removal from promotional materials by TAFE, a vocational school, after officials confirmed no record of her enrollment or attendance.

Outcome: As we have noted, this initial petition was reviewed by the General Sessions Court and was dismissed in favor of Mr Michael Eric Williams signaling that the court found insufficient grounds to sustain the Order of Protection at that level.

Escalation and Refusal to Accept Dismissal (Circuit Court Appeal)

Rather than accepting the lower court’s dismissal. Melissa Williams-Brown went to significant lengths to prolong the legal conflict by elevating the matter to a higher court.

Filing an Appeal: On July 20, 2017, shortly after the initial dismissal, the Petitioner, Melissa Williams-Brown, filed an appeal (Case #17X716) to move the case from the Metropolitan General Sessions Court to the Fourth Circuit Court.

The legal harassment began with the filing of a petition by Melissa Williams-Brown for an Order of Protection in the General Sessions Court of Davidson County, Tennessee.

Dragging Out the Process: This action forced the scheduling of a new hearing, requiring you to appear again in court. The Circuit Court Clerk issued a notice on August 3, 2017, setting a hearing for August 15, 2017, before Special Master Dana Ballinger.

Continued Legal Pressure:

By appealing the decision, the Petitioner ensured that the legal threat remained active and that you would continue to be subject to court summons and legal scrutiny, despite the initial findings in favor of Michael Eric Williams.

Melissa Williams-Brown begins to harass my attorney after last appeal was dismissed

After exhausting all means to harass me via the court systems, Melissa Williams- Brown began to harass my attorney, Cynthia Sherwood. It was her last pathetic attempt to insert herself into my life and wreak havoc. Melissa Williams-Brown's delusional plan was to convince Cynthia to drop me as a client.
After exhausting all means to harass me via the court systems, Melissa Williams-Brown began to harass my attorney, Cynthia Sherwood. It was her last pathetic attempt to insert herself into my life and wreak havoc. Melissa Williams-Brown’s delusional plan was to convince Cynthia to drop me as a client.

The documentary evidence establishes a clear pattern: a petition was filed containing damaging personal characterizations, and when that petition was dismissed by the lower court, Melissa Williams-Brown immediately escalated the matter to the Circuit Court. This sequence of events demonstrates a concerted effort to maintain legal pressure and reputational damage through the repeated use of the judicial system.

Why This Case Matters

My story is deeply personal, but it reflects a larger problem: the weaponization of misinformation in the digital age. When falsehoods are spread online, they do not remain private disputes. They become public narratives that can derail careers, silence voices, and distort truth. We live in a time when reputations can be destroyed with a few keystrokes, and accountability is often elusive. Families, communities, and institutions must recognize the seriousness of online defamation and take steps to protect individuals from its harm.

Choosing Resilience

Despite this relentless campaign, I refuse to be defined by lies. My career in counseling, advocacy, and reform is built on truth, empathy, and service. I have dedicated myself to helping others navigate trauma, addiction, and institutional injustice — work that requires integrity and compassion. Her attempts to destroy my reputation have only strengthened my resolve. I continue to write, to advocate, and to serve, knowing that my identity is not determined by falsehoods but by the impact I make in the lives of others.
